The Heart of the Matter is a song written by Don Henley, Mike Campbell, and J. D. Souther and produced by Henley and Campbell. The song was the third single of Don Henley's third solo, studio album The End of the Innocence. The single reached #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, #2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks, and #9 on the Canadian Singles Chart, during the winter of 1989-90.
The song was later covered by India.Arie on her 2006 album Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship. India Arie's version of the song is used in the trailer for the Sex and the City: The Movie.
