The Hat is a popular Southern California fast-food restaurant specializing in pastrami sandwiches.[1] This iconic eatery, once local only to the San Gabriel Valley, [2] has been offering its "World Famous Pastrami" to Southern California residents since 1951.[3][4] Its customers consume 13 to 15 tons of pastrami per week.[5]
The first restaurant opened in Alhambra.[5] It was adjacent to the historic Garfield Theatre (on Valley Blvd and Garfield). It has been run by the Conzonire family of San Marino since 1981.[6]

[edit] Pastrami
The pastrami sandwich, or pastrami dip[7], served by the restaurant is a signature item. It comes on a french roll with mustard and pickle with over a 0.5 pounds (0.2 kg) of meat and dipped in au jus. You may also add tomatoes.[8] Along with the large portions of pastrami, the restaurant is also known for serving french fries in a paper grocery bag. [9] The Hat offers no table service, so all of the items are wrapped to go, but paper plates are given to customers who wish to "dine in." [10]
The company has kept to its roots by keeping its retro neon signs featuring a chef’s toque and the words "World Famous Pastrami." [11]
