"The Ghost of Tom Joad" is a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song from the album of the same name. This release was initially included as a 'free single' which shipped with an early release of the VHS version of their 1997 home video.

The 1998 single version differs slightly from the Renegades album, as the band re-recorded the song for that album.

The title refers to the protagonist of the John Steinbeck novel The Grapes of Wrath, Tom Joad. It also takes inspiration from "The Ballad of Tom Joad" by Woody Guthrie. Only a limited number of copies exist. The cover artwork is called "Police Riot" by Eric Drooker.

[edit] Music video

This is a live video, shot in Irvine Meadows in September 1997. It is identical to the first version on the self-titled Rage Against the Machine video.
