The Gamblers (German: Die Spieler) is a 2007 German no budget film, and the film with the lowest budget (budget: 2000 €/ shooting time: 10 days) that was ever in the competition of a "A" Film Festival.
The film is based ( not always loyal ) on the novel The Gambler by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, although the film follows more a love story plot that a gambling adiction plot.
It was made as a no-budget produkton in the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB, German Film and Television Academy Berlin) during the seminar of the Hungarian director Béla Tarr.
It was shot on the Teufelsberg (German for Devil's Mountain), a hill in Berlin, which was built after the Second World War from the rubble of Berlin (400 000 buildings). This is the only location where the film plays.
The film had its world Premiere in the Competition of the FIAPF acredited 10th Shanghai International Film Festival, which is an A-Festival and one of the largest film festivals in Asia. It was also shown in the 31st Cairo International Film Festival, which is also FIAPF acredited and the biggest African film festival, the 10th International Film Festival Mumbai, in the Competion of the XXVI Uruguay International Film Festival and in the Competion of the 6th Non-Buget International Film Festival (6to. Festival Internacional Del Cine Pobre) (Gibana, Cuba).

In the midst of a world -to an outsider, impenetrable- the house tutor of the deserted General, Alexej Iwanovitsch, once ruled by an uncontrollable addiction to gambling, falls in love with his employers stepdaughter Polina. Alexej understands very quickly that he has entered a world ruled by monetary worries and dreams and that, offhand, he is not Polina’s perferct suitor. To him it seems that not only his social position, but also his self-imposed ban from the casino, stand in his way.
