The First Day of Summer

The First Day of Summer is a day held every spring, on a Thursday between the 19th and 25th of April, in Iceland to celebrate the coming of the summer. Long ago, in Iceland, there were two seasons, winter and spring. Midwinter in Iceland is usually sunless, and around the time of the First Day of Summer the sun comes back up on the horizon. Ironically, it's sometimes still cold and even snowing when the celebration is held, for Iceland's average summer temperature is 10.6 degrees Celsius (51 degrees Fahrenheit). On this holiday there are many parades, shows, and events. Also on this day, the people will exchange gifts with one another, usually kids though.
