The Factory Theatre Company
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Factory was created by Tim Evans and Alex Hassell.
In 2006 they decided to create a company in response to an Acting Industry, that they felt too often withheld a sense of independence from the creative artists within it.
Amongst the varied species of artist, the actor and director are unique in that they inhabit an environment with very little nourishment, outside the oases of employment.
The Singer can open her mouth and sing. The Painter can pick up his brush and he is engaged with his art. But for many, engaging in their craft means submitting to an industrial process of selection, often based upon the whims and fancies of non-artists and businessmen.
If selected, it can be for work full of creative experiences and artistic riches, but all too often it can be for work devoid of depth, stimulation or artistic merit; using our skills to sell to the masses the latest product. There is very little opportunity however to work outside of the system.
Their response was to create something that goes some way of reclaiming our right as artists to practice, explore and perform without the dependency of the countless cogs of the machine; and to provide a creative outlet for the best actors and directors of this country to come together and create something special, untainted and unique; in its own time and by its own rules.
