[edit] Plot summary
Wilberforce Bosworth is an up and coming doctor in the small Devon town of Teignmouth. Whilst working on a young cancer patient he becomes disillusioned with the medical profession. After taking some time off his job, Bosworth undertakes several months of isolation and self-contemplation in Cambodia where remnants of the rule of the Khmer Rouge drive him slowly insane. With his faith in humanity and medicine in tatters Bosworth returns to England and seethes in his contempt for mankind. Bosworth gradually collects an array of illegal weapons and begins to recruit members for a shadowy sect. As he preaches his radical philosophy Bosworth captivates a young law student, Candice Sparrow. Bosworth and Sparrow fall in love several happy months ensue.
However an exhibition at the British Museum of artefacts from Cambodia triggers his traumatic memories of his time there. Unable to cope Bosworth realises the futility of his love affair with Candice Sparrow. Bosworth kills Sparrow in a shadowy alley and then drowns himself beneath Nelson's Column.
The sect now leaderless fall into the same trap of despair until Bosworth's apprentice, Bartholomew Coburn sees beauty in Bosworth and Sparrow's daughter and takes her as his own.

[edit] Controversy
It has been argued that this novel paints an unfair picture of Teignmouth, Devon. Also many have argued that the character of the cancer patient is an unfair stereotype.
