The Denes

The Denes is a centrally located area of Darlington,County Durham, England which consists mainly of semi-detached and terraced housing surrounding valley areas of wooded public park and recreation land.

The area of The Denes is located just East of Cockerton, directly West of High Northgate (North Road) and Hopetown,Darlington AND is generally known to be the area between Brinkburn Road on the north and Woodland Road on the south up to where it joins with Staindrop Road and Cockerton. At the easterly end the southerly border is often judged around Corporation Road, by local estate agent descriptions.

The Denes is considered as a reasonably quiet and nice area of housing in Darlington in which to live.

There are six parks in this area which are called 'The Denes(sometimes known known locally as the following:-

Tennis Dene - adjacent to Deneside Road up to Pierremont Road (contained a tennis (and now a basket ball court)),

Sheddy/Doggy Dene - between Pierremont Road and Hollyhurst Road, (apparently named after a Swiss cottage type structure previously there in the 1920's)

Swingy Dene - between Hollyhurst Road and Surtees Street, (swings were and are still in this area along with other play equipment)

Bowling Dene - between Surtees Street and Bartlett Street. (a bowling green was and still is in this dene)

Football Dene - between Bartlett Street and Widdowfield Street. (As it is flat and perfect for football)

Paddley Dene/ Bumpy Slide Dene - between Widdowfield Street and Westbrook Villa's (So called as it once had a Paddling Pool and a large 'Bumpy Slide').

There are Off licenses, shops and takeaway outlets in The Denes and it is superbly positioned for Darlington town centre, the memorial hospital, schools, mainline bus routes and many other amenities.
