[edit] Reception
In addition to incorporating elements of the recently-completed Star Wars prequel trilogy, the Dark Nest Trilogy is seen by some as closure of many of the minor story points left dangling at the end of the New Jedi Order series; it explores the relationship of the Jedi and Galactic governance and introduces the first mention of time travel (or rather, "flow walking") in the Star Wars universe. This, along with Luke Skywalker's acceptance of using the Dark Side of the Force when necessary, has made this series a major talking point and bone of contention among Star Wars fans. Some fans have been very vocal as they see this as the epitome of a drive to inject more character conflict and a darker, edgier and more gritty vein into Star Wars fiction at the expense of character believability. Many fans cite perceived lack of adherence to characteristics of the films characters, and many online debates point out that the plots only work when and if the characters act and are motivated totally differently from the films and the themes George Lucas created. That said, Dark Nest sold well and Troy Denning was commissioned as part of the writing team for the next Star Wars book series.
[edit] Plot synopsis
An insectoid species called the Killik have been expanding beyond their borders, encroaching on Chiss territory. Several Jedi, most notably those who were students at the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 in the Young Jedi Knights series, are called through the Force to help. They find that their old friend Raynar Thul had found the Killik and been absorbed into their hive mind. Raynar had been acting as a sinister influence, and the Jedi find that they, too, are at risk of being absorbed by the collective consciousness of the nest. Meanwhile, Tenel Ka, the Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium, is impregnated by Jacen Solo; their daughter's name is Allana.
