The Daily Star is the largest circulating English daily newspaper in Bangladesh.[1] Established by Syed Mohammed Ali (popularly known as SM Ali) in 14 January 1991,[2] the newspaper is owned by Mediastar a venture of the Transcom Group, headed by Latifur Rahman.[3] Transcom also owns the largest circulating Bengali daily newspaper Prothom Alo, a trend that is followed by other major industrial groups in Bangladesh, as the Jamuna Group runs Jugantor, the Hamim Group runs Samakal and the Globe Group Janakantha.[4]

The newspaper is led by Mahfuz Anam, editor of the Daily Star, who is also the publisher and a member of the six-member Board of Directors that deals with financial matters.[5] Latifur Rahman is the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Management of the newspaper including the accounts, production, store and establishment is led by Syed Fahim Munaim,[5] managing editor, while the news team is led by Inam Ahmed, news editor, and Riaz Ahmed, chief reporter.[6] A Jalil Bhuyan, in-charge of Metro and Chittagong pages, and Sher Ali, advertisement manager, are the other leaders of the newspaper.[6]

The Daily Star publishes a number of supplements along its 16 page regular publication.
- Star magazine, a weekly magazine size published every Friday.[7]
- Lifestyle, a weekly fashion and lifestyle tabloid published every Tuesday.[8]
- Rising stars, a weekly tabloid size supplement for teenagers published every Thursday.[9]
- Law and our rights, a weekly supplement on legal issues published every Saturday.[10]
- Star Campus, a university based supplement of the newspaper.[11]
- Forum, a monthly supplement of the newspaper.[12]
