[edit] Plot

Set in a small town of Stillwater, Minnesota, Erik (Brad Renfro) is an adolescent loner with a stubborn mother (Diana Scarwid). Dexter (Joseph Mazzello) is his new next-door neighbor, who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. Initially, Erik is put off by Dexter, but the two soon become good friends despite their differences. Erik seeks a family in Dexter and his genial mother (Annabella Sciorra), but keeps the friendship a secret from his own mom, knowing that she won't approve. She discovers the friendship one night after Dexter's mom comes over to ask Erik about something Dexter ate. Erik's mom is furious and warns him to stay away. He doesn't listen and when the boys read an article in a tabloid about a doctor in distant New Orleans who claims to have found a cure for AIDS, they set out on their own down the Mississippi River in the hope of saving Dexter's life. They fail as they are caught by Dexter's mom when they reach New Orleans and Dexter finally starts to succumb to his disease and spends the rest of his time in the hospital. Dexter and Erik prank the doctors three times that Dexter's dead... but when they check on him in the third prank Dexter really has died. Erik attends his funeral and places one of his shoes in the coffin.

[edit] Trivia

  • Bruce Davison played the character of "Dr. Jensen", but was credited as Dr. Stevens.
  • Renee Humphrey's character was named 'Angel', although her tattoo was misspelled as 'Angle', so she's credited as the latter instead of 'Angel'.

[edit] Goofs

  • Erik incorrectly states Aspirin is derived from mold; he means Penicillin.
  • When the boys are on the river sailing to New Orleans, the same smoke stack is in the background, even though days have passed.
  • In the hospital, Dexter's body changes position between shots.
  • Continuity: Erik is seen gluing and smacking a leaf into their logbook, a reverse shot then shows three leaves with notes, another reverse shot and again one leaf.
