The Cruelest Journey is a book by Kira Salak. It details her 600-mile journey down the Niger river from the Mali city of Old Segou to Timbuktu, the first ever journey of that kind attempted alone by a woman. Throughout the book, Salak describes experiences of this journey and describes her predecessor, Scottish explorer Mungo Park, who was the first explorer sent to find Timbuktu by way of the Niger River.
