The Cover Girls

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cover Girls are a New York City-based freestyle/urban/dance-pop girl group, the brainchild of music promoter Sal Abbatiello. The original trio consisted of Louise Sabater (who is also known as Angel Clivillés), Caroline Jackson and Sunshine Wright. The Cover Girls are one of the first freestyle acts to crossover to the pop music charts. Their debut album, Show Me, released in 1988 on Fever Records, produced five U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart hits. This album is considered a classic in the Freestyle music genre.

In late 1988, Sunshine Wright decided to leave the group and was replaced by Margo Urban. In 1989, The Cover Girls released their second album, We Can't Go Wrong, on Capitol Records. This album also produced five chart hits, including the title track, which became their first American top 10 single. In 1990, while the Cover Girls were the opening act on the New Kids on the Block tour, Angel Clivillés decided to leave the group to pursue a solo career. Evelyn Escalera was hired to replace her.

In 1992, Margo Urban left the group and was replaced by Michelle Valentine. The Cover Girls released their third album Here It Is on Epic Records. On this effort, the only remaining original member was Caroline Jackson. They scored their second U.S. top 10 hit with "Wishing on a Star", a cover of the 1978 song by Rose Royce, as well as two other singles which charted.

1996's Satisfy only credited Michelle Valentine as a vocalist.

Former member Angel Clivillés released her solo debut album Angel in 2000. Clivillés still tours singing Cover Girl songs under the name "Angel (The Original Cover Girl)".

Evelyn Escalera, along with Lorraine Munoz and Sabrina Nieves, are the current line-up of the Cover Girls. They are currently touring worldwide and are also working on a fifth Cover Girls album.
