[edit] History

The Bridges was opened in 1988 by Princess Diana and is currently owned by Land Securities Group after they purchased the site in 1990.

In the year 2000 the shopping centre was expanded greatly, with its selection of shops greatly increased. The Bus station which was also in the Bridges was moved to the Park Lane Interchange.

Land Securities are reported to be in talks with Sunderland City Council about the acquisition of the Crowtree Centre site once it closes, which is rumoured to be by the end of 2009, with the land being used to expand The Bridges.
