The Breakaways

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two bands have used "The Breakaways" as their moniker. In the 1960s, The Breakaways were a female vocal trio. In the late 1970s, The Breakaways were a California-based underground rock outfit. The 60s female group known as The Breakaways consisted of Jean Hawker, Margot Newman, and Vicki Brown. In addition to recording their own songs, they did session work with many artists, including the background vocals on The Jimi Hendrix Experience's version of Hey Joe.

The 70s male rock group consisted of Paul Collins and Peter Case from The Nerves with Pat Stengl. The Nerves were an independent rock band who wrote the song Hanging On The Telephone and toured with The Ramones. When bandmate Jack Lee went solo, Collins and Case recorded several songs as The Breakaways until both musicians parted ways. Collins formed The Beat, also known as Paul Collins' Beat, whilst Case formed a new wave band called The Plimsouls. Today, both key members remain active in the music scene, releasing new material. Case tours as a singer-songwriter act and Collins performs with his band Paul Collins' Beat. The whereabouts of Pat Stengl are unknown, though Stengl has been credited for co-writing the song Crying Won't Help with Paul Collins. The song appears on the albums entitled "Live In Spain" and "The Kids Are The Same."
