The Black Boy Scouts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Black Boy Scouts (Danish:De sorte Spejdere) is a radio program on Danmarks Radio's dk:P3 with the two hosts Anders Breinholt and Anders Lund Madsen. In 2007 the program is aired on weekdays at 2-4pm, and is also offered online as a podcast.

The hosts refer to the show as "a musical talkshow", and giving airplay to non-hit list- and new music does play a big part in the show [1], however the peculiar satire that dominates the show is really what distinguishes it from other more common radio shows. The hosts don't comply with normal radio-behavior and will often talk at the same time for example, thus the program has an overall very impromptu atmosphere. In many of the episodes, the program's webmaster Jens and the technician Gry, as well as random Danish people they call on air often play active parts in the program.

The show has gained popularity in Denmark over its lifetime.

[edit] Examples of recurring segments

  • Prank calls abroad in the event of a curious news story
  • Household tips from the weekly magazine Hjemmet are read aloud with lewd undertones
  • "Trust-bingo" (or: faith-bingo): The listeners create their own cards and call the program when they believe they have completed a straight line bingo pattern. Upon getting through to the hosts, the listener must call out "Trust-bingo". After some brief small-talk with the hosts, the listener then wins a nosebag (supposedly an often used prize in small-town bingo games)
  • Visits by other radio hosts from P3, who talk about their own programs
  • Top 10.000: a very long list of the best musical hits, played from the bottom up. [2] (in danish)
  • "Klynke og Ynk" (which roughly translates into: Whimper and Pitiful): The hosts change their voices (becoming the two characters Klynke and Ynk) and ironically discuss whom everyone should feel sorry for this week.
  • Tips and trends, which is a weekly 'hot or not' list served up by four female students from Christianshavns Gymnasium.

These examples might sound weird, but listening to the show is really a prerequisite for getting the humor...
