The protagonist is a young girl named Elsa, after the lion in the film/book Born Free. Elsa lives with her mother, her stepfather and her half brother and sister. (Her father abandoned her and her mother when Elsa was a baby. After the father loses his job, he family is forced to leave their home and live in a Bed and Breakfast while waiting for social services to find them a council house.
Elsa makes her way through life by telling jokes and struggles to get along with her family at times. Because she is always telling jokes she wants to become a comedienne and when she comes home to find a television company in the foyer of the bed and breakfast hotel she tries out a comedy routine that, much to her disappointment, isn't successful. However, after using her strong voice to alert people of a fire in the middle of the night, she appears on television and soon realises that she doesn't have to tell jokes to be amusing.
The story deals with the issues of homelessness, dyslexia and discrimination. Also it shows the advantages and disadvantages of living in a Bed and Breakfast hotel.
