Reason for creation
Created by the amalgamation of the 63rd and 96th Regiments of Foot during the Childers Reforms, which were a continuation of the Cardwell Reforms, becoming the city regiment of Manchester, when they formed the 1st and 2nd Battalions, The Manchester Regiment.
