Symbol of time passing?

"Also a symbol of the passage of time to death, the grim reaper sometimes depicted as holding an hourglass and scythe."
This seems a little odd in the context. is it saying that the grim reaper is the sandman? --Asbestos 18:16, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

My thoughts is that its more that the "Sandman" evolved as kiddies version of the grim reaper--ZayZayEM 05:27, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
