Talk:The New Pornographers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Well...from a European perspective, live New Pornographers all have Kathryn Calder as the lead female vocals, so therefore is very much a band member. Tomkeene 21:20, 13 August 2006 (GMT)
- Not sure about adding Nora O'Connor. New Pornographers' website lists her, so that's good enough for me!
amazon.com has Nora O'Connor listed as a member as well in their list of albums by New Pornographers members in a list posted this year that was part of A.C. Newman's album recommendations, so I guess she's still considered a band member. Elocina 00:22, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Supergroup
Carl objected to this term in the early days of the band because none of them were known outside of Canada before the TNPs, but in recent years Neko Case and Dan Bejar have become indie superstars in their own right, so the context that this quote was made in has changed significantly.BigRockFan (talk) 23:36, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Kathryn Calder
If Kathryn Calder is just singing with the NPs on tour as a replacement for Neko Case, but hasn't be on any of the NP albums, should she be listed as a band member?
Also, I think this article should mention the NPs were originally intended to be a side project (according to an article I found on eMusic), however, they continued recording due to the sucess of Mass Romantic. From what I've heard on NPR, NP members like Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer) are now less involved in the band, only contributing a few songs per album.

Kathryn Calder not only tours with them, but will be singing/playing on their forthcoming release. This is according to a Winnipeg Sun article written by David Schmeichel dated 2006. In any case, she's listed on the band website as being a band member. Folduprabbit 07:09, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- Kathryn Calder does appear on Twin Cinema. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.153.136.113 (talk • contribs).
[edit] Broken Social Scene
Interesting to note, TNB is listed as a Canadian Indie Supergroup like Broken Social Scene. Perhaps a new article is in order?
[edit] Anonymous Deletion Requests
User:209.217.110.91 has been tagging a number of obviously notable music pages for speedy deletion, despite their notability being easily assessed with a copy of the WP:MUSIC guidelines and a web browser open to google. The New Pornographers, John Collins (Canadian musician), Nardwuar the Human Serviette have all been tagged as being vanity pages or otherwise not notable. The Evaporators, a band in which both John (of The New Pornographers) and Nardwuar (National TV and Radio personality) play has also been submitted for deletion, and not a single vote to delete has been recieved on that. This may have some connection to User:Arthur Ellis or someone connected to Warren_Kinsella vandalism. -- Xinit 14:57, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry guys, this has to do with the Warren Kinsella associatiom. I think it is three degrees of association, you'll be asked for speedy deletion? Arthur Ellis did this. Pete Peters 22:06, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Layout
Do we need to have the band members listed twice? I appreciate that the second time acts to show their links to other bands, but surely the two can be assimilated into one list. Tomkeene
[edit] WTF?
"The name of the band was supposedly chosen by Newman from a quotation attributed to Jimmy Swaggart, who once called music "the new pornography," although Newman did not know of the quote at the time. [3]"
This does not make any sense. Aaadddaaammm 20:10, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Seconded. My theory is that Dan Bejar suggested the name, given that it's referenced in one of his Destroyer songs, "City of Daughters," which predated Mass Romantic. Given Dan's ability to have this sort of postmodern method of writing lyrics, this is not as far-fetched as it sounds. I'm posting it with citation. 24.91.40.226 21:18, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Thirded. Dan also has a song on We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge (1996) entitled "The Pornographers." 70.22.199.46 08:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Another possible influence
I totally lack citation for this, hence just a talk page remark, but I have to say that their vocals sound to me to be very influenced by Belle and Sebastian. - Jmabel | Talk 02:04, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Searching for a better free photo
Is there a free/libre photo that shows as many members of the band as clearly as the current promotional photo? It would be nice to get the promo photo replaced with a good, libre photo.

- Here are a few alternatives: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. Most of those are of a sufficiently high resolution to crop down, I'll be happy to crop and clean up any of the candidates. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 18:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Feel free to do so; please also be sure to update the line-up box; people keep changing the photo, but not the information which goes with it, making this article less than helpful on the "encyclopedic" scale. Jenolen speak it! 01:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Please clean up the caption if you're going to replace the photo. Thanks! Jenolen speak it! 02:54, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Trivia?
According to this article their song "Electric Version" will be in the game Rock Band. Should that be noted on the page, perhaps in a trivia section? It's just kind of tacked onto the end of the Electric Version page. McFlynnTHM 13:41, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
