It's not exactly true that TED does no more than the electric meter outside, if your meter is like mine. Such outside meters do not show the wattage demand at any given time. Instead many have a rotating disk, you can time the rotations but that is surely inferior to being inside the house and reading a number from a display.

Agreed, there are more comprehensive devices which do what TED does and more.
