Irish temperance reformer Theobald Mathew (1790-1856). Caption: "The very revd. Theobald Mathew. The great apostle of temperance - extract of a letter from Father Mathew dated Cork Sept. 19 1848 to his friend Col. J.H. Sherburne at London in transmitting his portrait for his acceptance &c. "I send you my portrait, it is, I am informed, a faithful likeness. Farewell dear Colonel, I am with the highest respect your ever grateful and affectionate friend, Theobald Mathew."
