[edit] Non-free/fair use media rationale for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

  • Selected as the original paperback cover art for the book in the UK, the image used for most subsequent paperback editions, and consequently the image most strongly associated with the book. The image is characteristic of the style of Pauline Baynes's interior illustrations for the whole series, which have become celebrated in their own right.

Although this image is subject to copyright, its use here is covered by US fair use laws because:

  1. The image is only being used in the article about the book (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) for informational and educational purposes.
  2. Use of the book cover visually identifies the book in a manner that mere prose cannot, and meets all criteria in WP:NFCC.
  3. This image enhances the article in which it's displayed, as it provides an immediate relevance to the reader more capably than the textual description alone.
  4. The image is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value.
  5. The image is a primary means of visual identification of the article topic.
  6. The image is a low resolution image of the book cover, in an inferior graphics format (JPEG).
  7. The image is only a small portion of the commercially sold product (ie the book).
  8. The use of this image will not affect the value of the original artwork.
  9. The use of this image will not limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute or make a profit from the original. In particular, copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the book.
