Following his work at Douglas Aircraft and as an independent aircraft designer, Ted R. Smith completed the design of the Aerostar Aircraft sometime in 1964 - 1965. Approximately 1600 aircraft were manufactured by various manufactures, which owned the right to manufacture until Piper Aircraft produced the last Aerostar in 1984. Today the Aerostar manufacturing rights are owned by a newly formed business entity Aerostar Aircraft Corporation, which to date has never produced a new Aerostar airframe.
