Black Sabbath: The Collection is the projected follow-up to Black Sabbath's 1995 Forbidden album.
Tony Iommi recently mentioned in an interview with Metal Hammer magazine in Germany that "Black Sabbath is alive & well. However, it has taken the backburner due to Heaven & Hell & Ozzy's Touring Commitments. I've spoken to Ozzy, Bill & Geezer about the proposal of a New album & they agreed. After this, I had been looking about in my house and found some Riff Tapes from past Sabbath albums. I had kept a tape of Riffs & Songs which weren't used for each album as they were released. I was listening to them & found Great Unused riffs there."
Iommi went on to give further detail about the album. "We have booked time in a Studio in January, there we will try & flesh out some of the ideas."
Iommi went on to mention that the album material would come from Various Sources:
- Riff Tapes from EVERY Sabbath Album of Unused Riffs, including Songs with every Vocalist including David Donato. Riffs from After Never Say Die! with Ozzy on Vocals also included.
- Unused Songs & Riffs from Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler & Bill Ward's Solo Albums.
- Before Live Aid AS WELL AS before Ozzy Osbourne's "Retirement" Concert where the original Black Sabbath reformed, Rehearsals were arranged & a song was made each occasion. Both remain Unreleased. Iommi maintains that these Songs will be on the new album.
- Several different takes of "Happy Birthday", recorded over years of touring, will be remastered and added to the recording. (MRM)
- This was repeated for the 1997 Reunion Tour with 2 Songs being made & several Rehearsal/Soundcheck Jams being recorded for future use.
- These 2 Songs are Unreleased with Psycho Man & Selling My Soul being 2 Different songs. The 2 previously released songs will also be used.
- On the 4 Ozzfests where Sabbath headlined, Soundcheck Jams & Rehearsals brought more songs.
- The Aborted Demos from the 2001 album Sessions.
- Several Riffs Tony Iommi made up for a future Heaven & Hell release.
- Geddy Lee of RUSH will play Bass, Xylophone and Kazoo on 2 tracks.(MRM)
- In January, Sabbath will spend a month Trying out New Ideas & Jamming to try & create new songs.
By February, Iommi will then start to try out the various unreleased songs & riffs & try to formulate something out of them.
Then, In April, The Band will record the songs (Including the Unreleased & Released Ones) in a "Live Environment" whereby they will record the songs in Track Order in the space of 2 days (Like Anthrax's The Greater of Two Evils album).
The album cover will reportedly feature Ronnie James Dio in a clown suit, riding a bike with David Donato on his lap eating a grape sno-cone. (MRM)
The album is novel in the fact that it's not simply a "Rarities album", but these are being re-recorded & up-dated for Modern Day Sabbath in 2008 as a Whole Album, like Black Sabbath and Paranoid.
The album is set to be a Double Disc with a possible Sequel "Black Sabbath: The Collection II". The album is expected to be released by Rhino Records in June/July 2008. A 3 CD package will also be available, with the 3rd disk containing 6 hours of footage of the band playing ping pong. (MRM)
