The Happy Day Parade (also referred to as The HDP) are an English rock group from the Cotswolds whose members are Smit (lead vocals, kazoo), Joyna (guitar, vocals) and Scully (drums). Since the beginning of the bands music career in 2005 the band have always had a dedicated following. They have produced a single and have claimed to still be working hard on their yet to be released album, rumoured to be named one of the following: Named Mis-adventures with a sour touch (Yet to Succeed), Chunky's in the House or just The Happy Day Parades. Tracks that have been put up on the bands myspace website have attracted phenomenal praise and publicity. These tracks really display the huge variety in the bands music from the grunge inherited Chicken Korma all the way to the other end, the heart touching Jack the Hobo. The Happy Day Parade have promoted themselves with a tour and many festival performances over the years of 2006 and 2007.
As briefly mentioned before The Happy Day Parade's sound is extremely hard to pin-point. They use many great techniques with their instruments to display such variety in their music. They are known for changing styles many times within each track and putting on a very good live show to surprise their audiences with different techniques. "'Smit, get your haircut!" is a well known chant among HDP fans.

[edit] History
[edit] Formation
The first incarnation of what would eventually become The Happy Day Parade was formed in 2005 by fifteen-year-old Staffordshire-born Vocalist Smit, who was great friends with fourteen-year-old Moreton-born Joyna, where in the first few months would practice together to find their sound. Smit and Joyna played together for a few months and in no time had written the first songs of the HDP, the duo also worked on covers of other bands, their most popular of which is a cover of a song called Folding Stars by a band called Biffy Clyro. This song features Dink as guest vocals. Late 2005 the band was to perform their first gig at summers house, at this point in time the band's only members were Smit and Joyna. This was only a small gig but it was enough to get the band noticed. Just days after the gig Paul Carpenter Records approached the band offering them a future in the music business. The band snapped up this opportunity immediately. In early 2006 the band came across what was to be their future drummer, fifteen-year-old French-born Scully, they met him on a walkway at night where he had passed out due to vast alcohol consumption. Smit and Joyna took him back to their studio where he was to recover. Once Scully found out that Smit and Joyna were in a band he asked to join, as he had been taking drum lessons from a young age. Smit has commented on this period of time, saying:
| “ | Before we met Scully our sound wasn't quite defined. We just sounded like any other band you had ever heard. We were just discovering distortion pedals, really. Then we went slightly more onto Christian Rap for a bit. I guess it takes a while to work out exactly what you want to do. At the start you just want to sound like your favourite bands, but after a while you realise, maybe you could become your favourite band. | ” |
Joyna has also commented on this period of time, with a slightly different approach, saying:
| “ | Before we met Scully, lets be honest we sucked! Ha who am I kidding, we still suck today. | ” |
[edit] In Your House with the Pets (2005)
After playing gigs around the Cotswolds and receiving positive and enthusiastic reactions from the audiences the band agreed it was time to release an EP on the Paul Carpenter Records record label. "Your Mum" was released on 5th July 2005, and was the first track off the first EP named In Your House with the Pets, and after hearing it, North Cotswold Community Radio gave the band airplay. A few days prior to the release of In Your House with the Pets, the band were spotted at the Nokia Plug and Play Tent at Reading Festival 2006 by a Sigma Studio's representative. Soon after, the band was signed to the record label Sigma Studios.
[edit] Debut Album - Present
The upcoming album, The Happy Day Parade, is expected to be released sometime in Summer 2008. Rob Emms has been rumoured as the producer of the album. Tracks thought to be on the album include: Your Mum, 4 seasons and songs that have only ever been heard live such as Rock & Roll Dancer. However, the band is yet to confirm any speculation surrounding this subject.
[edit] Influence
The Happy Day Parade have many named influences creating their unique sound. These include: Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Led Zeppelin, Diana Ross, Silversun Pickups, Beethoven, Nirvana, Jack Johnson, Pixies, Rage Against the Machine, Weezer, Slayer, Rod Stewart and The White Stripes. Fans have also compaired them to Tenacious D, the band have commented:
| “ | We have a lot of respect for the D, we have hung out with them endless amounts of times, they are a great laugh. Scully has still got the marks from when Kage spilt his Wonton Soup all over him on the bus. We were watching harold and kumar on repeat, he was trippin. Anyway, we love them, but have never tried to imitate them or anything. | ” |
