I would like to mention that Nanchao was NOT a Thai kingdom and wonder why this theory is still persisting in many popular references. It might be rather a Bai kingdom with some substantial Thai/Tai population. Guangxi/Guizhou, the Red River area is now commonly believed to be the place of origin for all the Tai ethnic groups.
