The examination is held once a year at the end of September. It is conducted at four locations within Korea (Seoul, Busan, Gwangju and Daejon) and at 57 locations in 23 countries across the globe.

The levels of the examination are beginner (Grades 1 & 2), intermediate (Grades 3 & 4) and advanced (Grades 5 & 6). The standard of a successful candidate is that they must get more than 40/100 in each section of the examination and more than 200/400 for the overall test mark in order to pass Grades 1, 3, and 5; they must get more than 50/100 in each section of the examination and more than 280/400 for the overall test mark in order to pass Grades 2, 4, 6. For example, a student who scored 48 in the writing section of the beginner level but 286/400 overall would fail Grade 2 but still receive certification for Grade 1.
