Terry Hands

Terence David ('Terry') Hands (born 9 January 1941) is a leading British stage director.

He was born in Aldershot, and studied at Woking Grammar School, University of Birmingham and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

In 1964 he established the Liverpool Everyman.

Terry joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 to run the Company's touring group, Theatregoround. He become joint Artistic Director with Trevor Nunn in 1978, and in 1986 chief executive.

His decision to close the RSC's The Barbican Theatre and The Pit in the winter of 1990-91, was an essential act for the RSC, securing an increase in subsidy from the Arts Council.

In 1997 he became been director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru which presents much of its work on tour in Wales and the rest of the UK.

In October 2001 he resigned from his position as an advisory director of the RSC.

Hands once married actress Ludmila Mikaël. Their daughter, Marina Hands, is also a successful actress. Hands is currently married to director Emma Lucia. He has two sons named Sebastian (18) and Rupert (15), who is currently performing in Clwyd Theatr Cymru's production of Macbeth having previously performed in the theatre's 2007 production of Arcadia (play). He shared his role in both plays with fellow King's School, Chester schoolboy James Ellis.
