I changed the example to less controversial ones.

Also I removed the part about voluntary submission. There is no requirement under international law that an area must have voluntarily submitted to another power to be part of that nations territory. The example of American Samoa was particularly bad since the United States just took it, and the consent of the local people was never an issue.

This article could be expanded profitably by exploring the ramifications of thinking of man as a territorial animal.Territoriality and dominance are two primitive and basic expressions of social behavior in animals, where they have been studied extensively. Unfortunately the concepts of property and authority in human behavior and their relationships to territory and dominance have not been studied in any systematic way. I would be glad to start this discussion if any one is interested.

The Wikipedia articles on Property and Authority suffer from the same deficiency, and could well use the same discussion .

Isn't this a threat, the word territory? Look at those fighting in the middle east over land. Religion is a disturbing cause as well.

Neither this page, nor any of the linked pages, appears to describe "territory" in the sense of (a) the entire geographical extent of a state or other political entity (as opposed to a subdivision of a state); or (b) an area controlled or dominated by a gang or other organization, or a sales person's "territory." --Russ (talk) 21:13, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

David George DeLancey concerning the explanation of Territory, i started a search with the terming "Colony" Territory came up is it possible a colony came before the terming territory,anyway terra meaning Land and perhaps tory meaning a part collected of , though there is possibly another terming then collectively, a territory consists of an erea of!"AN EREA OF" A Perfect definition of , now the value behind it is what is a definition represent to it's territory and if it does it then is just part of it it is not allowed or given the right to be part of it it is just naturaly part if it, terratory'it is an availability of a surounding erea, perhaps the people long ago would need something from a colony wich perhaps suplies something in any effort, it is agreed firstly through the people of the Land that this is possible so a colony is granted now through more understanding of of or towards the people of the land a boundery must be set up for incomeing traffic and or out going traffic this prenounced agreement towards others that are not part of the Land wich now a colony is provided are asured of an erea territory wich will proved in an erea of capability and effort towards the need of or to supply , a colony will do just this this does not mean the colony is colonized for colonizing and colonized are excepting an effort in any direction , "THE PROTECTION OF LAND" A Colony is called a colony for it is a possible mobile status though has an operation venture of long periods of time, haveing been granted a territorial award from the people of the land is a more front effort of colonizing wich will allow a colony to spread towards other portions of travell wich then would have to seek a different or capable territory for it's surplusing venture for servival,3:16 p.m.David George DeLancey 9-10-2007 David George DeLancey 19:17, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
