I would dispute several of the categorical entries for Thaemlitz's music. He certainly doesn't make any IDM or microsound as it is understood in the music writing community — or if he has, he hasn't released it! (It would be like saying Mozart wrote waltzes.) AlexR 15:14, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use removal

The use of images not in compliance with our fair-use criteria or our policy on nonfree content is not appropriate, and the images have been removed. Please do not restore them. -Mask? 23:58, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Please cite the specific criteria in our fair-use criteria which is being violated, before making major edits to the page. I will request a lock on this page in the meantime. AlexReynolds 12:50, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
If you want to add non-free content, you have to justify its use. If no clear rationale is given why the non-free content is necessary, it stays out. Kusma (talk) 13:17, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
It is a discography, and an image is necessary to illustrate the recording in question, which is one purpose of a discography. This seems clear to me. I will revert the change back until there is a specific explanation for the removal from our fair-use criteria. AlexReynolds 13:25, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
The majority of the fair use images on this page are not used properly with reguard to our Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria policy (likely in that the use is not minimal (3.a.) and it is in a list or a gallery (8.) and are decorative or not necessary to understand the material) or our Wikipedia:Non-free content guideline that states that cover images may only be used for critical commentary on the cover itself, not just identification. Kotepho 13:28, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
I should also note that an image of a magazine cover is being used not to illustrate the magazine, but to illustrate the person covered on the magazine. This is also explicitly against our non-free content policies, certainly criteria 1a. if they are alive (the article doesn't seem to say that they are dead) and that none of these images that I looked at have appropriate fair use rationales on their image description pages (10.c). Kotepho 13:35, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, no fair use galleries, please. There's no commentary here on the recordings, so the fair use images are completely inappropriate. We can't use fair use in this decorative manner. Moreschi Talk 13:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

More specifically, here are the relevant "bleeding chunks" from policy: "Cover art from various items, for identification and critical commentary (not for identification without critical commentary).", and "As little non-free content as possible is used in an article. Short rather than long video and audio excerpts are used. Multiple items are not used if one will suffice; one is used only if necessary.", and also "Non-free media is not used unless it contributes significantly to an article. It needs to significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic in a way that words alone cannot. The use of non-free media in lists, galleries, and navigational and user-interface elements is normally regarded as merely decorative, and is thus unacceptable."
Please do not restore the images. Moreschi Talk 13:42, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. It's a shame I wasted so much time creating this page in the first place. AlexReynolds 13:45, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
How is the page a waste? It's a very nice article that contains a good list. It just doesn't need all the images. They violate policy, and possibly copyright law. I'm sorry, but we just can't abuse fair use in this manner. The article is no worse off, anyway. Moreschi Talk 13:49, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Thaemlitz.jpg

Image:Thaemlitz.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
