'El Telefériqo" (pronounced tele-ferry-ko) is a gondola lift in the city of Quito, capital of Ecuador.
Running from the edge of the city centre the Telefériqo runs up the east side of the Pichincha volcano to a lookout on a hill known as Cruz Loma.
The Telefériqo opened in July 2005.
The ascent takes 8 to 10 minutes travelling some 2500 linear metres, and rising from 2950 metres (8850 feet) to 4100 metres (13,400 feet) altitude.
At the summit there are a number of restaurants, coffee shops and a variety of tourist stores. There are also trails for hiking and areas where pictures can be taken of Quito. Due to the increased altitude and the wind on the mountain it is considerably cooler and is also susceptible to fog, especially in the mornings.
At the base there is a visitor centre that includes an amusement park (Vulqano Park), restaurants & food court, and other attractions.
