Taupo (New Zealand electorate)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taupo is a New Zealand electorate, in the Central North Island, which includes the following population centres: Acacia Bay; Arapuni; Hikumutu; Kaitieke; Kakahi; Kinloch; Kuratau; Lichfield; Mangakino; Marotiri; Mihi; National Park; Ngakonui; Ngapuke; Ohakune; Okoroire; Ōmori; Orautoha; Owhango; Puketurua; Putaruru; Raetihi; Rangitaiki; Taupo; Tihoi; Tirohanga; Tokaanu; Tokoroa; Turangi; Wairakei; Waitahanui; Waotu; Whakamaru and Whakapapa Village.
The seat is normally regarded as a safe Labour Party seat, and is currently held by the Hon. Mark Burton. However, boundary changes to the Taupo constituency for the 2008 general election, including the incorporation of National-leaning Cambridge now means that this seat is regarded as one of the most marginal in the country.
[edit] History
The electorate was formed in 1996, after the introduction of the MMP electoral system.
