Taunggyi University was established in 1992, four years after the collapse of former socialist regime in Burma. Situated in Taunggyi, the peak capital of Shan State, Taunggyi University forms a great university for native Shans.

Taunggyi College was established in 15 June 1961. It was later upgraded to a degree college level and then to a university in 1992.
