Tarendra Lakhankar was born in Mundikota, a remote village in Maharashtra state, India. He is the eldest of five brothers.

Currently, Dr. Tarendra Lakhankar is working as post-doctorate research fellow at Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, USA. He is working on calibration and validation of 4-Diamensional variational data assimilation soil moisture data. He has a Bachelor's degree in Civil-Water Management from SGGS College of Engineering, Nanded and Master's in Environmental Engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur. His research on Estimation of Soil Moisture using Microwave Remote Sensing Data earned him his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) from, Graduate School and University Center of The City University of New York in Oct-2006.

During his doctoral studies, he participated with a multidisciplinary research team in the development of a new mapping model to estimate soil moisture and to understand the dynamics of soil wetness under different land cover conditions using a combination of optical and active microwave satellite data. Tarendra Lakhankar won best oral presentations award at the Fourth Annual NOAA-CREST Symposium.
