[edit] Biography

Taran was born in San Francisco, California to David Smith and Candy Bennici, and is of Scottish, Irish, and Italian descent. He has an older sister "Aria" Smith (b. 1977) who is an international model. Taran is named for the main character in Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series of novels for young adults.

Taran taught himself to play the drums, and his favorite subjects were math and art. Taran graduated from high school at fifteen, and briefly attended USC. He was accepted to USC's Film School, but dropped out shortly after beginning classes.

At 18, he gained control of his US$1.5 million trust fund, which he accused his parents of squandering.[1] He has since reconciled with his parents[citation needed].

On April 27, 2001, shortly after his 17th birthday, Taran married Heidi Van Pelt, who was sixteen years his senior. Taran and Heidi divorced on February 2, 2007. Taran and Heidi had owned and managed PlayFood, a vegan and organic restaurant in Studio City and a non-dairy cheese manufacturing plant in Kansas City. While Taran was financing Playfood, Inc., Heidi was taking the money and putting it into the company she created, Playfood LLC. Taran emerged victorious from a protracted legal battle and remained in control of Playfood Inc. Without his former partner involved in the business, Taran grew Playfood into a success in the beginning of 2008.

Taran was arrested while protesting with Daryl Hannah to save the South Central Farm when it was threatened by a land developer. (June, 2006).
