Tara Smith (philosopher)

Tara Smith (born 1961) is a professor of philosophy and holder of the BB&T Chair for the Study of Objectivism [1] and holder of the Anthem Foundation Fellowship for the Study of Objectivism[2] at The University of Texas at Austin.

Smith specializes in moral and political theory. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and received her doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.

Smith has lectured all across the United States including Harvard University[3] Wheeling Jesuit University[4] , Duke University[5], University of Pittsburgh[6], and New York University[7] and to groups of businessmen[8]. She has also organizes conferences, often ones emphasizing on objective law.[9][10][11]

Her published works include the books Viable Values: A Study of Life as the Root and Reward of Morality, Moral Rights and Political Freedom, and most recently Ayn Rand's Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist published by Cambridge University Press. She is also a contributing author to Essays on Ayn Rand's We the Living (edited by Dr. Robert Mayhew) and Essays on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead (edited by Dr. Robert Mayhew). Smith has written in journals such as the Journal of Philosophy, American Philosophical Quarterly, Social Philosophy and Policy, and Law and Philosophy[12].

She is on the board of The Philosopher's Index[13]and is on the Academic Advisory Council of the The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism at Clemson University[14]. Smith is a member of the Ayn Rand Society[15], which exists within the American Philosophical Association.

Smith is affiliated with the Ayn Rand Institute.[16]
