Douglas Squirrels, Lake Tahoe, California
Excerpt from a photograph taken on the trail to the Desolation Wilderness, about 500 m from the highway, on 8th August 2004. Species ID by size (much smaller than Eastern Gray Squirrel, behaviour (persistently in trees) and coloration (no stripes) so not ground squirrel or chipmunk), range (shouldn't be any American Red Squirrels anywhere near Tahoe) and comparison with individuals seen at closer range.
