The Takanashi clan of Shinano province were direct descendants of Minamoto no Yorisue ,son of Yorinobu. One of the grandsons of Yorisue soon on developed the name of "Takanashi". Takanashi Tadanao was actually a noted retainer under the Minamoto clan during that of the Genpei War. During the Sengoku Period, the Takanashi enjoyed much prosperity and expansion in their Shinano region, until being attacked by the likes of Takeda Shingen. When the Takeda clan invaded their territory during the year of 1553, the Takanashi allied with that of the Murakami, Ogasawara, and Suda clans. However, they all turned to Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo province for assistance. The domain of the Takanashi was still lost however, but the Takanashi managed to at least stay as retainers under the Uesugi clan.
