[edit] England and Wales

In England and Wales, Year Seven is the seventh year of schooling after Reception. It is normally the first year in secondary school, although in some areas may form part of a middle school. It is the first year of Key Stage 3. Children are normally aged 11 when entering Year 7, rising to 12 by the end of the academic year.

Students in maintained schools are taught content from the National Curriculum which incorporates the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science as well as the 9 foundation subjects, and other areas of the curriculum such as Religious Education

The suggested curriculum frameworks for Key Stage 3 include the teaching of the following areas in the core subjects:

Subject Content

  • To extend use and control of complex sentences
  • To structure a story with an arresting opening, a developing plot, a complication, a crisis and a satisfying resolution
  • To write reflectively about a text
  • To define & deploy words with precision
  • To infer and deduce meanings using evidence
  • To comment on how writers convey setting, character, mood through word choice & sentence structure
  • To read a range of recent fiction texts independently as the basis for developing critical reflection and personal response
  • To develop drama techniques to explore in role a variety of situations and texts or respond to stimuli
Mathematics[2]
  • To simplify fractions by cancelling all common factors; identify equivalent fractions
  • To multiply and divide three-digit by two-digit whole numbers; extend to multiplying and dividing decimals with one or two places by single-digit whole numbers
  • To use letter symbols to represent unknown numbers or variables
  • To plot the graphs of simple linear functions
  • To compare two simple distributions using the range and one of the mode, median or mean
  • To understand and use the probability scale from 0 to 1; find and justify probabilities based on equally likely outcomes in simple contexts
Science[3]
  • To use scientific knowledge to decide how ideas and questions can be tested; make predictions of possible outcomes.
  • To describe and explain what their results show when drawing conclusions; begin to relate conclusions to scientific knowledge and understanding.
  • To describe a simple model for cells that recognises those features all cells have in common and the differences between animal and plant cells.
  • To describe fertilisation as the joining of the nucleus of a male sex cell (e.g. sperm) to the nucleus of a female sex cell (e.g. egg)
  • To explain how food chains within a habitat can be combined into food webs.
  • To describe a simple particle model for matter and use it to explain scientific phenomena
  • To recognise that a force has both magnitude and direction
  • To use a simple model of energy transfer

[edit] Scotland

The nomenclature used for year groups in Scotland differs from the rest of the United Kingdom. Students in their final year of primary school are classed as being in Primary 7, where they follow the relevant curriculum from the Curriculum for Excellence documentation.[4] Students in this year group are normally aged between 10 and 12 years.

[edit] Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, students in their final year of primary school are classed as being in Primary 7, where they follow the relevant curriculum from the Northern Ireland National Curriculum for Key Stage 2. Students in this year group are normally aged between 10 and 11 years.
