Tabor City

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tabor City is a small town in Columbus County, North Carolina.

It is located on the South Carolina border, approximately 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, 28 miles north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and 65 miles west of Wilmignton, NC. Mild winters and hot, humid summers typify the climate in this coastal plain community. It was named after Mount Tabor Baptist Church (now Tabor City Baptist Church). Mount Tabor, located in the Holy Land, is believed by many to be the place of the Transfiguration of Christ. Originally named Mt. Tabor, the town's name was changed to Tabor City by influence of the postal authorities due to confusion with Tarboro, North Carolina.

Notoriously known as Razor City in the mid-20th century, it has also considered itself the Yam (sweet potato) Capital of the World, the Yam City. Each October, the North Carolina Yam Festival is held, featuring crafts, train rides, arts and several vendor. Now a rural area struggling to survive in the 21st Century, strangled by the loss of the tobacco cash crop and a lack of employment, it is hoping that a new state prison will stimulate the economy. Oddly enough, Tabor City boast more banks than fast food restaurants.

The town also contains Lake Tabor, a 500 acre recreational lake, and the Horace Carter museum, showcasing the Tabor-Loris tribune, the first weekly newspaper to win the Pulizer Prize
