[edit] Summary

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image of an Au coated replica of a ta-C "diamond-like" coating. Structural elements are not crystallites but are nodules of sp³ bonded carbon atoms in which lattice geometries randomly alternate between the cubic and hexagonal polytypes of diamond. Scale marker corresponds to about the size of a virus. The cobblestone-like structure is at such small scale that such coatings appear mirror smooth.
