Kościesza Coat of Arms

Szymon Szymonowic or Simon Simonides or Szymonowicz or Bendoński (born Lwów, 24 October 1558; died Czarnięcin near Zamość, 5 May 1629) was a Polish Renaissance poet. He was known as the Polish Pindar.

He studied in Poland (Kraków), France and Belgium. From 1586 he was connected with Grand Hetman and Kanclerz Jan Zamoyski with whom he organized the University in Zamość (Akademia Zamojska) in 1593–1605. He became a nobleman (szlachcic) in 1590 (he bore the Kościesza Coat of Arms).

His best known works in Polish are the Sielanki (Pastorals) of 1614. He also wrote plays in Latin, e.g. Castus Joseph (1587), Pentesilea (1614).
