[edit] Overview
KakaIru is a frankenword, or portmanteau used to describe the pairing of these two particular characters, most often in yaoi or shonen ai situations. Since Narutos publication in 1999, the genre has grown from a very underground part of the fanfiction culture to a major player. KakaIru fics make up almost 40% of all Naruto fanfictions on the internet today. They focus on the relationship between Kakashi and Iruka, two ninjas from the village of Konoha (or Leaf Village), in a world where there are various ninja villages all named from the elements. Stories are usually based little on events in the manga or anime but most are written completely independantly due to the extremely vague connection between the two in the manga (they only speak on a few occasions) so most fans stray from the canon of the manga. This is considered common practice in fanfiction writing.
