The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia is a televised music competition, presented by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in association with the University of Sydney. It is held every four years and is internationally recognised as one of the world's great piano competitions.[1] It was established in July 1977 by Claire Dan, and admitted as a member of the Federation of International Music Competitions in 1978.[2][3]
The competition consists of five stages and an opening recital;[4][5] the first stage involves world-wide auditions to locate the best pianists.[6] The first, second, third and fourth stages take place at the Seymour Center, University of Sydney,[7][8][9] and the fifth stage is held at Sydney Opera House.[10][11] The overall winner must be aged between seventeen and thirty years old,[12] and will receive a prize of $25,000, with smaller prizes awarded for other placings.[13] A total of thirty-six pianists from a number of different countries are selected to compete in the competition for a period of three weeks.[12] In the competition's thirty-year history, no Australian pianists have won first prize.
