"Sweetness Follows" is a song from R.E.M.'s eighth studio album Automatic for the People. It also appears on the soundtrack to the movie Vanilla Sky.
Michael Stipe, in an interview published by Murmurs gave the following hint regarding how the lyrics of "Sweetness Follows" can be interpreted:
"I've written songs before that I thought were these incredible diatribes against organized religion, these numbing thoughts that this life doesn't matter because you're moving on to something better... 'Sweetness Follows' is the song I'm thinking of."
