[edit] Campus

Hanken has campuses in Helsinki and in Vaasa. Both campuses are centrally located in the city centres.

[edit] History

Hanken's origins date back to 1909, when it was founded by members of the local business community "as the most advanced educational institution in Finland with instruction in the Swedish language". Today the School is one of Finland's three business schools of university standing. The right to award doctoral degrees was acquired in 1944. The School operates in Helsinki, where a substantial portion of Finland's business is located, and in Ostrobotnia on the west coast, where small and medium sized business predominates - and where many of Finland's Swedish-speakers live. Today, the School enjoys both high national and international esteem and has close ties with Finnish high-tech and other world-class industry. The name "HANKEN" is a nickname for the Swedish name of the school "Svenska handelshögskolan" The school moved into its present building in Helsinki in 1952, which was completely renovated and modernised about ten years ago, though in a manner that re-established and strengthened the original combination of modernism and functionalism of the 1950s. In 1980, a branch campus was set up in Ostrobotnia in the city of Vaasa, in order to meet the needs of the Swedish-speaking population for Swedish language university-level education in the field of economics and business administration. Hanken has been a state-funded institution since 1975 and along with nineteen other Finnish universities is under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.

Since the foundation of Hanken’s Student Union in 1909, Hanken’s students have had a strong network of their own. The Hanken Student Union (SHS) is an all-round organisation that provides services to its members. In Finland, membership of a student union is mandatory for all Bachelor’s and Master’s level students, while it is optional for PhD students. SHS lobbies to promote the interests of students in many domains: locally, regionally and nationally. It runs many committees and clubs, and has a total of 2,000 members. The activities primarily relate to studies, to creating ties to the corporate world, to social activities and to international networking. The student union arranges visits to companies and company presentations, and it gives practical advice, including career planning. Relaxing and extracurricular activities are an important part of studying. The student union arranges dinners, parties, travel, an annual talent competition and an annual ball. There are several sports clubs that function as part of the student union. SHS is an important forum for Hanken’s international students and for international partners. The International Helsinki Days are arranged every year to introduce Finnish corporate life and culture to students from all over the world. The student union’s website, www.shsweb.fi, provides the latest information about the student union’s activities, its partners and its services.
