Premkumar was the first son of Mr Swayamprakash, who worked as an exports control officer in Kerala. Premkumar did his schooling and under-graduate studies at St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, followed by an MBA. He was an avid debator and won laurels for the institutions of which he was a part.

Premkumar began his career with Shaw Wallace, following which he held senior managerial posts at Lakme cosmetics and Benkiser. His break came when he was appointed CEO of Benkiser India Ltd. His stint as CEO at Benkiser earned him plaudits from all around. He then went to Russia and worked his way up there and became the CEO of a large FMCG company. In 2002, he bought over the company. His clientèle have included large multinational companies to whom his organisation provided an integrated route to the vast potential of the Russia market. Under his leadership, VIZ was launched which is a range of innovative smart products for smart people, which include a large range of household products.

He also is the co-founder of Cis-link, an on-line trading forum.

He is married to Dr Rani Premkumar.
