Between 1924 and 1991 Yekaterinburg, Russia was also known as Sverdlovsk, and is the capital of the current Sverdlovsk Oblast

Sverdlovsk (Ukrainian: Свердловськ, translit. Sverdlovs’k, Russian: Свердловск) is a city in the Luhansk Oblast (province) of south-eastern Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Sverdlovsky Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast, and is located approximately 80km from the oblast capital, Luhansk.

The current estimated population is around 72,531 (as of 2001).
