Suvla is a bay on the Aegean coast of the Gallipoli peninsula in European Turkey, south of the Gulf of Saros.
On 6 August 1915 it was the site for the Landing at Suvla Bay by the British IX Corps as part of the August Offensive during the Battle of Gallipoli.
In the English-speaking world, many people who otherwise might not have heard of Suvla know something of its history through the Eric Bogle song And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (which has been recorded by numerous artists including the Clancy Brothers, Joan Baez, the Pogues, the Dubliners and Mike Harding) and Foggy Dew ( note that song referred to here is the third song in the list). It is also mentioned in the Great Big Sea song Recruiting Sergeant.
